Goertek and NXP Release Google’s Android Things Reference Smart Speaker Design

Goertek Inc., a leading global original design manufacturer (ODM) of speaker solutions, and NXP Semiconductors N.V., a leading global semiconductor manufacturer, today announced the availability of their certified reference design for a smart speaker operating on Google’s Android Things platform, featuring the Google Assistant built-in and Google Cast functionality.

This reference design incorporates Google’s Android Things into a smart speaker. Goertek and NXP’s groundbreaking turnkey solution is designed to accelerate an original equipment manufacturer’s (OEM’s) path to bring to market a consumer-ready smart speaker that can serve as a central hub within the modern smart home.

Goertek created this smart speaker reference design to utilize Android Things, which provides a secure and full-service software platform that can be managed effortlessly via over-the-air (OTA) updates. In addition, it uses NXP’s high-performance i.MX SoC, which enables superior connectivity with the Assistant and Google Cast. Goertek has integrated these features together with its advanced 360-degree acoustics system, which includes custom-designed neodymium drivers and an expertly engineered DSP sound algorithm that delivers powerful and premium audio in a compact footprint. This total acoustics design results in 25% more bass than speakers of a similar size. In addition, Goertek’s high-performance microphones help provide optimal voice pick-up for the Assistant. This helps deliver a top-notch user experience within a warm home-friendly design, developed and engineered by Goertek’s award-winning design team.

By pairing Goertek’s expertise in acoustic design and speaker product development with NXP’s expertise in developing cutting-edge processors and seamless technology integration, the new reference design can help any OEM customer bring a compelling high-performance smart speaker to market in a reduced time frame and reduced product development cost.

“The release of the reference design together with Goertek is part of NXP’s long term commitment to Android Things and continuously bringing better products to our customers,” said Leonardo Azevedo, Director i.MX Consumer Marketing. “The platform brings together the Google Assistant, Chromecast Built-in, Tensor Flow and many other services in Android’s vast ecosystem. Combining the expertise of NXP and Goertek with Google’s Android Things marks a major milestone in empowering customers to develop and go to market faster with highly differentiated speakers for the connected home.”

“Goertek offers expertise and scale in developing consumer-ready smart speakers, with its vast experience developing and manufacturing acoustic solutions for the world’s leading consumer brands. By partnering with NXP, Goertek can now dramatically accelerate the time to market to launch an Android Things smart speaker.” – Dr. Pen C. Li, VP of Product Marketing and Sales, Goertek
